A Backyard Hardscape
In this project, Golden Courtyard helped the homeowners transform a muddy, low-lying backyard affected by poor drainage, tree-root pressure, sun blockage, and unsafe access into a cleaner, brighter, pet-friendly outdoor space designed for easier movement and safer use.

The Challenges
1 /
No Clean Space For Pets
The muddy surface conditions made the yard unpleasant for the homeowners' cat and left very little usable space for the kind of flower planting the homeowners wanted to enjoy.
2 /
Unsafe Existing Steps
The old steps had settled significantly due to long-term moisture exposure, making the transition into the yard feel too steep and unsafe for daily use.
3 /
Wildlife & Rotting Fruit
Fallen fruit and decaying organic debris were attracting wildlife, creating smell and hygiene problems, and turning the yard into a place the homeowners and their cat could not use comfortably. The tree canopy also blocked too much of the sunlight the backyard should have been getting.
4 /
Tree-Root Pressure On The Fence
The central fruit tree was doing more than making a mess. Its root system had already begun pushing against the fence, causing visible leaning and creating the risk of a much more expensive fence rebuild later.
5 /
Corner Collects Water
The lower left section of the yard acted like a drainage trap, collecting water from the property and surrounding drainage points. Because the area was clay-heavy and poorly drained, it stayed damp, weedy, and muddy for long periods.

1 /
Pet-Friendly Hardscape
After regrading the yard for better water movement, we installed new sod and created cleaner interlocking activity space so the homeowners' cat could move through the yard more comfortably. For the flower-growing areas, we also gave planting guidance with pet-safe options in mind.
2 /
New Ergonomic Steps
We rebuilt the steps with more comfortable proportions and a safer transition into the backyard. Along the fence line beside the hardscape, we intentionally left a blue river stone buffer to improve drainage at the fence base and leave space for any future fence replacement work without damaging the new installation.
3 /
Tree Removal And Root Mitigation
We removed the problematic fruit tree and carried out root removal work to eliminate the ongoing pressure against the fence. This immediately opened up more usable space, brought sunlight back into the yard, and helped preserve the existing fence instead of forcing a more expensive rebuild.
4 /
Hidden Drainage Treatment
We removed the clay-heavy mud and overgrowth from the low corner of the yard, then built a retaining planter that adjusted the grade, stabilized the soil, and improved the appearance of the space. Around the drainage point, we used blue river stone to support water infiltration and visually soften the area without interfering with drainage function.
Our Solution

The Result
Less Risk Of Future Rework
Corrected grading, tree removal, and the added drainage buffer along the fence line reduced the chance of recurring mud, fence pressure, and avoidable repair work later.
Better Appearance And Property Fit
Interlocking, retaining planter work, and refreshed landscaping gave the small backyard a more finished look and helped it better reflect the value of the property.
Friendly Backyard
The cat now has cleaner hardscape and lawn areas to move through, while the homeowners gained safer access, more sunlight, and dedicated planting space.
