A Trapezoid Backyard
In this project, Golden Courtyard helped the homeowners transform a large muddy backyard affected by erosion, dead lawn areas, disconnected activity zones, and awkward utility conditions into a cleaner, better-linked outdoor space designed for easier maintenance and full everyday use.

The Challenges
1 /
Worn Fence Gate
The old gate had deteriorated to the point where it no longer matched the safety, privacy, or appearance expected of the rest of the property.
2 /
Awkward Utility Access
The exterior water tap had been installed outside the fence line, which made routine watering and cleanup more frustrating than it should have been.
3 /
Broken Drainage Circulation
The backyard grade was uneven, and there was no clean hardscape path connecting the deck, play areas, and shed. That meant water collected in the wrong places and movement through the yard stayed uncomfortable in wet conditions.
4 /
Dead Lawn And Mud
Heavy tree canopy blocked the light needed for healthy grass growth, leaving bare soil, decaying leaves, damp smells, and persistent muddy conditions around the play areas.
5 /
Erosion Around The Fence Line
The low planter beds around the fence had lost their retaining function, so soil was washing out during rain and spreading mud across the yard instead of staying where it belonged.

1 /
Utility And Gate Upgrades
We coordinated the extension of the water line so the tap could function from inside the backyard where it was actually needed, and we replaced the deteriorated fence gate with a stronger new gate that better completed the yard from both a security and appearance standpoint.
2 /
Shade-Tolerant Mulch Beds
Rather than forcing grass or hardscape into areas dominated by mature trees, we cleared the decaying leaf buildup and converted those zones into clean mulch beds. This improved hygiene, reduced weeds, protected tree roots, and created a more intentional landscape treatment for low-light areas.
3 /
Retaining Planter Reconstruction
We removed the failed low border beds along the fence and rebuilt them with the height and structure needed to retain soil properly. This stopped the recurring washout problem and gave the yard a stronger planted perimeter.
4 /
Keeping What Still Worked
Instead of pushing an unnecessary full rebuild, we assessed the existing gravel path leading to the shed and found that its base was still structurally sound and draining well. We preserved it and tied it into the new interlocking work with more precise edge detailing, avoiding needless demolition and expense.
5 /
Interlocking Connections
We reworked the grading and installed a broad interlocking hardscape connection through the areas that stayed muddy most often. This new paved link connected the main deck to the playground and trampoline zones, giving the family a clean, durable surface where the yard had previously been difficult to use.
Our Solution

The Result
Best Value
By fixing what needed to be fixed and preserving what was still performing well, the project delivered a cleaner, more durable result without unnecessary reconstruction costs.
Better Hygiene
Removing constant mud, decaying leaf buildup, and ongoing soil washout made the backyard easier to maintain and more comfortable to use on a daily basis.
Fuller Use Of The Backyard
With clean hardscape links and more stable ground conditions, the deck, play areas, and shed are now part of one connected yard instead of disconnected zones with muddy transitions.
